School bus accident at Passau: 36 children safely evacuated from bus!

A serious traffic accident occurred in Lower Bavaria today when a school bus came off the street and landed in the ditch. A total of 36 children and the 58-year-old bus driver had to be evacuated from the vehicle after the doors of the bus could no longer be opened. The driver probably drove into a curve too quickly. Fortunately, everyone involved was unharmed, and the evacuation was quickly carried out by the fire brigade, which saved the children out of the bus through a window. After the incident, the children were able to continue their journey in a replacement bus or were picked up by their legal guardians. The crashed bus was recovered and was already ready to drive again. During the accident recording and recovery, the district road was closed briefly, but has now been released for traffic again. The police have initiated investigations against the driver due to the possibly excessive speed. PNP reports .

In a further incident of the past few days, a school bus with 30 children in Ornumer Weg in Kosel slipped from the smooth road to a ditch. Fortunately, all children and the bus driver were able to free themselves. A large contingent of fire brigade and emergency services was alerted. Three of the 30 schoolchildren suffered injuries and had to be brought to surrounding hospitals. The injured children were first spotted by the emergency services in the Bohnert fire station and then handed over to their parents. The salvage of the bus was difficult because some trees had to be felled. The assignment in which around 50 emergency services were involved ended around 12:30 p.m. Feuerwehr.de reports .

The situation of children in road traffic

The recent incidents illustrate the dangers that children are exposed to in road traffic. In 2022, a total of 6,080 children and adolescents under the age of 15 were registered in traffic accidents in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is an increase of 20.2 percent compared to the previous year. On average, almost 17 children or adolescents are in the road. Most affected children are cyclists (2,049), car inmates (1,787) and pedestrians (1,564). Transport policy in North Rhine-Westphalia therefore aims to reduce the number of accidents. The “Vision Zero” aims to have no dead or seriously injured in road traffic. This also includes a new traffic safety program and the school road decree, which enables temporary closures of streets near the school to increase security for students. Environment NRW informed .
