Peaceful protests in Gelsenkirchen: The police keep location under control
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the Gelsenkirchen police accompanied a total of ten meetings, including nine registered and a spontaneous one who celebrated the "day of work". The focus was particularly on a demonstration by the right party “Die Heimat” on the station forecourt, which resulted in several counter -demonstrations. Despite the large number of events, the majority of the actions were peaceful, even if the police initiated 13 criminal proceedings, including due to the breach of the peace and violations of the meeting law.
During the meetings, a participant was injured by "Die Homen" in a robbery and treated medically on site. The senior police director Karsten Plenker was satisfied with the assignment and emphasized: "Thousands of people were peacefully demonstrated in Gelsenkirchen." Despite the violent interference, the police were able to secure the fundamental right to freedom of assembly and keep the Situation under control.
