Last week two dangerous goods saddle trains were stopped by the police on the A7 motorway, which had serious defects in load securing. This throws a light on the challenges and risks associated with the transport of dangerous goods and puts the safety in road traffic in the foreground.

On Monday, July 29th, the Autobahn police Bad Hersfeld noticed a Lithuanian tractor -trailer, which was evident by slow driving on the "Reckeröder Berg" climbing route. A more precise control revealed that the 23 tons of a strongly caustic and toxic granules transported in the trailer had already slipped due to poor securing. This led to considerable security concerns, since a release of the dangerous goods could not be excluded while driving.

The situation was tightened by several factors: the 46 large bags that were stacked on pallets offered unstable storage, while the attempted securing with tension belts was not sufficient. Since the straps constricted deep into the sacks, but did not bring the necessary tension, the risk of an accident was significant. The police were forced to prevent the vehicle's onward journey and arrange a correct load securing.

The drivers concerned, a 42-year-old man from Belarus and his Spanish shipper, had to pay a security deposit of a high three-digit euro amount on site. Significantly higher fines are also expected for the Lithuanian vehicle owner. These measures illustrate the financial consequences of improper load securing and the strict regulations in dangerous goods transport.
