Bochum rejects Bitcoin: crypto enthusiasts are outraged!
The Bochum City Council has decided: Bitcoin will not be an official means of payment in the city! In a unanimous coordination, the council members rejected the proposal of the small party "Alliance Germany" to want to introduce cryptocurrency as a means of payment for municipal fees. The rejection came mainly from the CDU, which expressed concerns about energy consumption in Bitcoin mining and described the proposal as "absolute nonsense".
The crypto community is surprising about the decision and sees a missed opportunity for Bochum to position itself as a pioneer in digitization. Critics argue that the city could benefit from the economic growth and the settlement of start-ups if one would be given more recognition cryptocurrencies. While countries such as El Salvador Bitcoin are already using a legal means of payment, the topic remains controversial in Germany because there are concerns about risks such as money laundering and tax evasion. Details on this decision are here to read.
