BDA Architecture Prize NRW 2024 receives BDROPS Josef Albers Gallery

The Josef Albers Gallery in Bottrop has again won an important architecture award. Klaus Müller, the city's technical deputy, accepted the BDA Architecture Prize NRW 2024 on September 5, 2024 in Düsseldorf. This award officially makes the gallery one of the ten most beautiful buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is considered great recognition for the beautiful combination of culture and architecture.

Klaus Müller said with joy: "This is a great appreciation and encourages us to combine culture with appealing architecture in our commitment." This connection has already been successfully implemented in other projects in Bottrop, such as the cultural church and the expansion of the August Everding cultural center. The awards are therefore a confirmation of the qualitative order that the city has in the cultural landscape.

The new dimension of museum work

With this award, the cultivation of the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat is recognized by Annette Gigon. The director of the museum, Dr. Linda Walther, emphasizes the great importance of the extension: "With the extension, we gained eight high-quality exhibition rooms. These rooms enable us to realize large international projects, such as the first museum of the American artist Sheila Hicks in Germany, which we will open on October 12th."

In addition, two new workshops for educational and mediation programs have been set up, which enable the museum to offer an extensive program of workshops and tours that are very popular with visitors. Walther emphasizes that the architectural quality of the cultivation is not only aesthetically sophisticated, but also opens up new ways in museum work.

The Minister for Locales, Home and Construction, Ina Scharrenbach, is also pleased with the repeated award for the city of Bottrop and the Josef Albers Gallery. It describes the award as a further proof of the high quality and the value of the cultural projects that are realized in Bottrop.

The Josef Albers Gallery has now been awarded for the third time for its architectural concept - in addition to the BDA Architecture Award NRW, the building in 2023 also received the ARC Award and the BDA Architecture Prize Vest Recklinghausen Gelsenkirchen. The jury praised the draft and the execution by explaining: "The construction of Gigon/Guyer reacts volumetrically subtly to the city garden and the two extensions of Küppers and reveals a deeper dimension when dealing with the architecture."

Ten prices of the same number of remarkable projects were awarded at the BDA Architecture Prize NRW 2024. Other awards include, for example, the pumping station of the Emscher cooperative in Oberhausen. The extension of the Küppersmühle Museum in Duisburg was honored with the architecture Prize in gold, as was the construction of an airship hall in Mülheim.

The Josef Albers Gallery not only stands out through their aesthetics, but also proves how important architecture can be for the cultural development of a city. These recent successes underline the role of the gallery as a cultural center, which promotes both local and international artists and appeals to a wide audience.
