Gigabit internet for the Ruhr area: Gelsen-Net and WestConnect cooperate!

Gelsen-Net and WestConnect have signed a partnership to improve fiber optic infrastructure in the Ruhr area. The cooperation, which includes several cities such as Bottrop, Gelsenkirchen and Recklinghausen, aims to offer high-quality internet and telephony service at speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s. A crucial component of this agreement is the mutual purchase of data packages to ensure optimized use of the existing and newly built fiber optic infrastructure. In addition, framework contracts to rent Dark Fiber, which could strategically strengthen the cooperation.

until 2027 plan Gelsen-Net and WestConnect to supply more than 200,000 households in the seven cities with FTTH (Fiber to the Home). This is done as part of an "Open Access approach", which enables various telecommunications companies to offer their products on discriminatory conditions. According to Carsten Lagemann, Managing Director of Westconnect, this cooperation maximizes the network utilization and a reliable telecommunications infrastructure is created. Thomas Dettenberg from Gelsen-Net emphasizes that strategic partnerships are necessary to improve fiber optic availability in the region and gradually reduce the outdated copper network.
