Food fraud uncovered: This is how sausage is deceived!

In connection with a current food scandal, many consumers feel cheated. The Weser-Kurier report reveals that numerous sausages that are advertised as high-quality products are actually largely consisting of other types of meat. An example of this is a bratwurst that is declared as a horse meat, but is mainly made of pork.

The Bremen food supervisors have also targeted a fishmaker who sells white sausage that actually contains wild boar. Interestingly, the dealer is also a hunter and shoots wild boars, but it says in the small print of the label that the majority of the sausage comes from mast pigs. Such misleading labels lead to the deception of consumers.

regulations for food integrity

In the context of EU regulations, basic rules on food integrity are determined, as described in the DLG. Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 serves to protect consumer interests and to ensure a knowledgeable choice in the consumption of food. In addition, fraud, deception and falsification of food are strictly prohibited.

However, there is a heterogeneous and fragmented legal situation in the EU, which means that there is no uniform regulation. Instead, the member states are responsible for enforcing criminal and sanction measures. There are European standardized regulations that concern the misleading by presenting and the loudness of information practice.

future requirements for companies in the food sector include the implementation of a documented vulnerability analysis in order to better identify and minimize possible risk exposure. Ultimately, these regulatory framework is intended to ensure food safety and quality and to strengthen consumers' trust in the food industry.
