Blumenthal in change: New promenade brings a breath of fresh air to the water!

In Blumenthal, the future promenade is the focus of the advisory board. City planner Siegfried Hafke from the Bremen Nord building office presented detailed plans. The promenade will have a length of up to 770 meters and offer a connection to the Bahrplate. The new foot and bike path will bring the residents closer to the water. Due to the flood protection, however, no green zone will be created in front of the dike, only five trees are planted as a shade.

An access place from the historical axis in the combing area to the Weserstrom is created by a gate. The width of the promenade will be eight meters except for a viewpoint and 13 concrete seat benches are installed along the route. Students of the education campus should also benefit from the new promenade. The paving work begins shortly and the completion of the entire system is planned for summer 2026. Hafke compared the project with the 1.7 -kilometer promenade in the Europahafen, which is equipped with 40 benches and six hornbeams.

flood protection measures in Blumenthal

Im Zusammenhang mit den Baumaßnahmen am Kämmereigelände laufen auch die Baggerarbeiten für den Hochwasserschutz bereits seit Wochen, wie der Weser-Kurier reported. For the new sheet pile, which will be almost 1500 meters long, project costs of 19 million euros are estimated.

The preparatory work includes drilling and excavation to remove old pipes and track residues so that the construction is not delayed. The sheet pile walls are to be inserted into the ground with a special vibration technique, which causes less noise and vibrations. The first planks are to be anchored in May 2024 and the last in autumn 2024.

A dike chart is also integrated to give pedestrians and cyclists access to the Weser, provided that no storm surge threatens. Between the dike chart and the Weser, the already mentioned eight meter wide promenade will be created, which connects the industrial site with the supermarket and the Bahrplate. The design of the promenade is currently being discussed with the Office for Roads and Transport, while the tender for the construction of the sheet pile wall for the end of February 2024 is planned.

The construction work as part of the flood protection project should run by 2030 and represent the largest construction volume in the north of Bremen. Overall, the costs for all flood protection measures amount to around 300 million euros, whereby the flood barriers are to be increased by up to 70 centimeters.
