food supply in rural areas: Aaron’s mobile supermarket is fighting with new challenges
In Eutingen-Mäurach there is a lively weekly market every Friday, which not only ensures fresh food, but also serves as a social meeting point. Aaron Daubner and his "supermarket on wheels" are a fixture in the region and offer a diverse selection of food for all generations.
The innovative concept primarily addresses older and mobility -limited people who, thanks to the mobile supermarket, can easily supply themselves with the bare essentials on their front door. But not only the regular customers appreciate the offer, young people also like to come to spoil themselves with sweet treats.
Despite the great encouragement, Aaron Daubner faces a new challenge - since July 1, vehicles from 3.5 tons have had to pay a toll fee on German federal highways and motorways. These additional costs could amount to up to 2000 euros a month, which could endanger the profitability of the mobile supermarket.
The CDU member of the Bundestag Gunter Krichbaum has informed himself about the situation on site and plans to support Daubner in coping with this financial burden. The question of whether the mobile food market should be classified as a commercial transport or way to work raises legal difficulties that still need to be clarified.
Aaron Daubner emphasizes that he does not want to take any financial risks and that the toll fee may have to be passed on to customers. The future of the mobile supermarket depends on the support of politics and the population, otherwise the supply in rural areas could be seriously at risk.
