Two new stumbling blocks in Calw: memory of forgotten victims
Calw, Deutschland - Two new stumbling blocks will soon be moved to Calw to honor the sacrifices of National Socialism. The initiative comes from the alliance "Calw remains colorful", which the city of Calw has already approved. The plaques made of brass are said to remind Rosa Creuzberger and Hermann Schürle. Creuzberger, who was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 and deported to Auschwitz, and Schürle, a mentally ill man who was murdered in Grafeneck in 1940, are representative of many victims from the region.
The artist Gunter Demnig, who launched the stumbling block project, sees these tables a way to bring the victim's name back to the places of their lives. He criticizes central memorials because they are often not sufficiently visible. "You stumble with your head and heart," so Demnig about the symbolic meaning of the stumbling blocks. The first stumbling block in the district was relocated in Ottenbronn in 2013 to commemorate Helmut Großhans, a victim of Nazi Euthanasia. The new plaques should be a further step towards promoting tolerance and humanity. Further information can be found here .
