Successful drug fight in the Dutch port: How customs fought the smuggling

drug fighting in the Netherlands: a success story

The work of customs in the Netherlands shows impressive success in the fight against drug smuggling. The focus is on the ports of the country, which serve as a gateway for drugs. 16 tons of cocaine could be ensured within the first half of 2024, compared to the 28 tons of the same period last year. This decline is an indicator of the success of the tightened measures of customs.

The masterminds of the drug smuggling are now less inclined to choose the Dutch ports as the goal, according to customs. This is due to the installation of connecting officials in Latin American countries of origin, as well as close cooperation with customs in Brazil. Specialized teams and techniques are also used to make drugs more difficult.

A new approach is that containers from risk -oriented countries are unloaded and continuously monitored in separate areas of the ports. Suspicious containers are immediately examined for possible illegal content. The goal is to prevent criminal networks from bribing corrupt port and customs employees for information and thus bypassing controls.

Last year, a total of over 69 tons of cocaine in the Netherlands were secured, with the ports of Rotterdam and Vlissingen particularly affected. One of the greatest confiscations took place in Vlissingen when 3.6 tons of cocaine were discovered in a container with bananas from Ecuador. The street sales value of this find was over 270 million euros.

This successful measures not only combat illegal drug trafficking, but also increases safety in the ports. The efforts of customs contribute significantly to reduce the drug smuggling in the Netherlands.
