Chaos on the Duhner beach: hurricane gusts are forcing tent camps for evacuation

The spectacular events on the Duhner beach not only surprised those involved, but also reminded everyone present how quickly the weather can turn into the opposite. A planned day at the Beach Handball tournament of the Wunstorf players, who had started with a lot of joy and excitement, turned into an emergency when the gusts of wind suddenly put on and set rain. The violent conditions led to the evacuation of almost 100 young people who wanted to participate in one of the largest beach handball tournaments in Germany.

While the summer heat initially caused a pleasant atmosphere with temperatures around 35 degrees, the arrival of the coward "Veruca" shocked the participants. Meteorologists had warned in advance, but nobody expected these warnings to turn into a serious situation so quickly. Within a few minutes the sky fell over the dark, while wind and rain are extremely increasing and a terrifying picture.

evacuation measures and help on site

At the sight of the stormy cloud front, not only the supervisors of the Giw (Wunstorf syndicate), but also passengers in surrounding restaurants and hotels were presented with alert. The helpers of the Red Cross and the fire brigade were quickly on hand to bring the young people to safety. The flight was a race against time because the forces of nature are already swinging entire tents and pavilions.

The responsible supervisors of the beach handball team were forced to organize the evacuation under enormous pressure and in chaotic conditions. Hotels, restaurants and schools have been set up as emergency shelters to offer the 500 affected participants a safe roof over their heads. Fortunately, the Hanover fire brigade was in Cuxhaven at the time, which made it easier to support the faster organization of evacuations. It made a strong impression that everything went efficiently despite the adverse circumstances. The cooperation of the various rescue teams drew a picture of community and helpfulness.

The consequences of the storm

The night was long and sleepless for many of the young athletes and their supervisors. According to reports on the GIW website, many hardly came to rest, as the horrors of the stormy evening in their heads sounded. Fortunately, all participants remained physically intact. Nevertheless, the horror that these natural forces triggered could not be underestimated. Several teams decided the next morning to cancel the competition because the exhaustion and the increased risk of injury were present in the sand.

A exciting weekend in Duhnen ended in a chaotic activity that nobody expected. Even the best plans can be confused by the unpredictable course of nature. An experience that the players, supervisors and parents are remembered, even if the events may not go out as everyone would have liked.
