Storm flood season threatens: delays in coastal protection on Wangerooge and Langeoog!
The storm flood season on the Lower Saxony North Sea coast is just around the corner, but on the East Frisian Islands Langeoog and Wangerooge there are delays in the construction work for dune protection. The Lower Saxony state company for water management, coastal and nature conservation announced that unfavorable weather conditions have hindered the work on the coastal protection measures. While around 450,000 cubic meters of sand are to be washed up on Langeoog, only half has been done there so far. WANDS still run on Wangerooge to strengthen the north-east duns, which are delayed for technical reasons.
At the same time, it is progressing in other places on the mainland, for example with dike reinforcements in the Krummhörn and Harlesiel. The Lower Saxony state government, together with the federal government, is planning investments of around 80 million euros in coastal protection. Environment Minister Christian Meyer described this as a record sum. But how much is actually issued cannot yet be estimated. Further information can be found here to be found.
