Assinger remains head coach: Ski women rely on continuity despite criticism!

The Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) has decided to continue working with the head coach of the Alpine women's team, Roland Assinger. This decision is made in a phase in which Assinger was vehemently criticized due to its leadership style. Athletes such as Super-G World Champion Stephanie Venier particularly expressed their concerns. Nevertheless, Assinger also received support from other athletes such as Cornelia Hütter and Nicole Schmidhofer, who appreciate his work. The internal opinion is therefore split.

ÖSV sports director Mario Stecher confirmed that Assinger will continue to be responsible for the alpine ski racers in the upcoming Olympic season 2025/26. A two -hour meeting with around 40 athletes served to clarify questions about Assinger's leadership style. Confidentiality was guaranteed so that everyone involved could openly discuss. Controversial topics led to a feeling of division within the team, which is now obviously overcome. "We found a common basis behind which everyone is standing," said athlete spokeswoman Nina Ortlieb.

new sporting director

With Christian Mitter, a new sporting director for the Ski Alpin area was presented. Mitter succeeds Herbert Mandl, who will in future lead the construction of an alpine base in St. Christoph am Arlberg. The ÖSV hopes for new impulses to become trendsetter in alpine skiing again. Mitter, who has returned from Norway to Austria, sees Assinger a valuable coach and also in favor of continuing the collaboration.

However,

Stecher admitted that there had been mistakes in the past and that the criticism of Assinger was partially justified. In order to improve communication in the team, the ÖSV workshops and an e-learning platform for trainers are planning. This is intended to help the challenges be better mastered.

perspectives and challenges

Nina Ortlieb found that there was a uniform wish to continue working with Assinger during the talks. Nevertheless, there are concerns whether the resulting consensus can be considered stable or only a temporary calm. Middle and engraver agree that a further processing of the situation is necessary, especially with regard to Venier, which was considered a possible career end. The aim remains to bring the team together and bring it to the successful course.

With these measures, the ÖSV wants to tackle the challenges of the coming season, which were characterized by criticism and internal tensions. The decision to leave Assinger in office could ensure a stability in the team that is urgently needed for the next competitions.
