Alcohol frenzy leads to spectacular accident on A5 near Appenweier
In the early Friday morning hours, a spectacular traffic accident occurred at the Appenweier junction when an alcoholic 25-year-old wanted to drive up on the A5 towards Karlsruhe with his Mercedes Vito. At 3:45 a.m., the man initially drove the right of way to the other road users, but then he crashed into a breakdown vehicle to the acceleration strip. The impact was so violent that the Audi was pushed onto the right lane, where it collided with an Iveco transporter. However, the driver of the Audi was able to get out of the dust before the police arrived.
The search for the fleeting Audi driver, in which a police helicopter was also used, has so far been unsuccessful. The 25-year-old at the wheel of the Mercedes had a breath alcohol value of around 1.1 per thousand and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, but was soon released. The highway was temporarily closed during the cleanup, but is now completely passable again. The property damage is estimated at around 30,000 euros and both vehicles had to be towed.
