Elevator at Esslingen-Zell train station: Seniors suffer from standstill!

The elevator at Esslingen-Zell train station has been out of service since October 21st, which represents a significant challenge for many residents, especially older people. Access to the center of Zell, where important shops and a bakery can be found, is therefore severely restricted. Bojan Muzek, an affected resident, expresses his incomprehension about the long repair time and reports that many seniors on Eisenbahnstrasse have similar problems that are difficult to deal with in everyday life. Inquiries to Deutsche Bahn and the city of Esslingen initially yielded only unsatisfactory answers. However, a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn announced that the elevator is expected to be put back into operation on November 14th after a person blocked it on October 21st, which, in addition to breaking glass, also damaged technical components [Esslinger newspaper].

The situation around the station is not only tense because of the broken elevator. The area in front of the train station is cordoned off, not because of the conveyor, but because of the wrecked cars that the police had removed. Discussions are already underway here about the future management of the space.

Investing in accessibility

At the same time, Deutsche Bahn announced that it would invest a total of around 500,000 euros in renewing the elevators on tracks 3/4 and 5/6. The work, which began on October 27, is expected to be completed in February 2026. During this time the elevator system will not be available, so passengers are recommended to use the S1 to get to the nearest accessible station German Railway.

Travelers with reduced mobility are recommended to contact the DB Mobility Service Headquarters at least one working day before the planned journey to ensure a smooth journey. Information about the mobility service center can also be found on the Deutsche Bahn website.
