Esslingen University is moving: a new residential area is being created!

Big changes are coming at Esslingen University. The educational institution plans to give up its location on Flandernstrasse and move to Neue Weststadt. Rector Christof Wolfmaier compares this move, which is planned for the winter semester of 2026, to the relocation of an entire village community. An exciting chapter for the university that also represents a new beginning. How the Esslinger Zeitung reports, the decision is not only important from a student perspective, but also has far-reaching consequences for the entire city.

The university area on Flandernstrasse has great potential for living space. The city has already announced an urban development competition to redevelop the area. The jury meeting for this competition took place on February 7, 2025 and included excellent entries. The architectural firm Octagon Architekturkollektiv (Leipzig) won first prize together with studiofutura (Berlin). Second prize went to the haascookzemmrich STUDIO 2050 and Planstatt Senner teams, while Pesch Partner and Studio CROSS SCALE took third place. This new residential area is intended to offer a sustainable infrastructure and, among other things, create space for 450 to 650 residential units. That reports esslingen.de.

Sustainable development of the area

A central goal of the planning is to repurpose the existing buildings and, if necessary, expand them in order to minimize resealing and CO2 emissions. The plan is to set up a food market in the existing cafeteria building, which will improve local supplies for the new residents. Additional retail units and health offerings will also be part of the concept. The future has also been thought of: a daycare center as well as sports and leisure activities for all generations are being planned. However, the decision on the existing university sports hall is still pending.

But what does this mean for the local population of Esslingen? After the framework plan has been approved, which is expected to be presented to the local council in the second half of 2025, the gradual marketing of the area can begin. This not only means new living options, but also a new attitude to life in the city. The planned structural measures and innovative concepts will result in an upgrade of the cityscape.

The role of circular housing use

In the context of the development in Esslingen, the “Circular Housing Use” project, which is supported by various institutions, including the TU Berlin and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is also of interest. This research approach aims to make the use of living space more efficient, especially in communities with a limited supply of new building space. It's about mobilizing unused living space and creating housing options that are suitable for generations. This methodology could also be important for the development of the new residential area in Esslingen to ensure that the living space is used optimally and meets the needs of all age groups. The TU Berlin describes the concept as an important instrument for sustainable urban development.
