Bürkle in Freudenstadt: Sustainability Award for innovative glass technology!

The Glass Congress 2025 recently took place in Freudenstadt, and the big winner of the day was Robert Bürkle GmbH. The company received the flat glass industry’s first sustainability award in the “Production” category. This award recognizes innovative technologies that help save energy and resources in glass processing. Bürkle is not only at the forefront, but is also setting an example for a more sustainable future. The Schwarzwälder Bote reports that the glass laminator “easy-LAM IFL” from Bürkle received the award because it... eliminates the use of an energy-intensive autoclave and at the same time ensures high quality standards in glass lamination.

The Federal Flat Glass Association further narrows down the importance of autoclave-free lamination processes for environmentally friendly production. These technologies not only reduce energy consumption, but also shorten cycle times compared to traditional processes. In addition, the “easy-LAM IFL” enables flexible processing of different glass types and formats. The result: consistently high and reproducible product quality, which is what many companies are looking for.

First steps towards more sustainability

The sustainability award for the flat glass industry is still young, but is already eagerly awaited. We are looking for projects that are not only environmentally friendly, but also actively contribute to climate protection. The Bundesverband Flachglas attaches importance to various categories: Whether companies, products or special low-budget projects - everyone is invited to submit their sustainable ideas by December 31, 2024. Participation is free and promises an exciting platform for innovative approaches in the industry.

The application documents must include, among other things, the name of the project and a summary of a maximum of 2,000 characters. The best entries will be evaluated by a jury of experts, and the award ceremony is planned for the Glass Congress in May 2025.

Shaping a sustainable future

With the focus on sustainability, other industries are also thinking outside the box. For example, the Fraunhofer IPK looks at the circular economy and calls for a rethinking of the life cycles of products. Instead of quick disposal, products should be processed or broken down into reusable parts. Innovative projects such as Catena-X and Digma-DT show that progress in sustainability can also be achieved in the automotive industry through networking and intelligent technologies.

The industry is required to actively shape the path to resource-saving and climate-neutral production. Companies like Bürkle are on the right track and are setting standards for others. The combination of technological innovations and a clear commitment to sustainability could be the key to a sustainable industry. There is definitely something there!
