Cycling adventures in the Altmühltal: pure nature and discover historical treasures!

The country road to adventure leads through the picturesque Altmühltal and invites cyclists to an unforgettable cycling trip. On July 19, 2025, the Schapbacher Schwarzwaldverein starts its bike tour with 26 participants. This starts at 6 a.m. at the swimming pool car park in Schapbach and leads via charming Wassertrüdingen and Treuchtlingen along the Altmühl to Gunzenhausen, where the cyclists start at 11 a.m. The route is not just intended for endurance cyclists, as the program includes a comfortable route of around 190 kilometers in three days. There is something for everyone here!

The first stage to Gunzenhausen not only takes the participants to their destination, but also to an unforgettable natural experience. Here the cyclists stay for two nights in the Posthotel “Arnold”. Exciting activities are planned for Saturday, including circumnavigating the romantic small and large Brombachsee as well as the impressive Altmühlsee. The bird island on Altmühlsee, which can only be reached on foot, promises a real natural highlight.

An exciting weekend

On Sunday, the last stage takes the participants from Gunzenhausen via Dennenlohe, including a detour to the castle park, to Dinkelsbühl, which is known for its beautiful half-timbered architecture. There is enough time for a two-hour exploration of this historic city before the return journey. The bikes are loaded and the group can take home the memories of an eventful weekend. This exciting tour is organized by honorary member Ernst Jehle and chairman Josef Oehler, who put a lot of passion into putting the event together.

The charming cycle tour in the Altmühltal

Accompanying this trip is the famous LauschRadTour in the Altmühltal, which aims to bring the five Altmühl-Mönchswald communities closer together with its 35 kilometer long circular route. This tour also has a historical background dating back to the 19th century, when bishops, knights and margraves fought for influence. Cyclists can discover the old city walls, the fascinating architecture and the modern education center in Triesdorf as well as visit the Merkendorf Eco-Energy Park.

The audiovisual elements of the tour are a particularly exciting experience. Participants receive multimedia information about the surrounding area via the “Listening Tour” app, which can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store or Google Play. Stories like messages in a bottle from Ornbau or the secrets of the Middle Franconian bratwurst make the trip an unforgettable experience. The awakening of nature in the “Wiesmet” bird sanctuary also offers the perfect ambience for nature lovers.

Cycling for every taste

The Altmühltal not only offers a variety of cycle routes, but also a lot of things worth seeing. Whether a flat route for leisurely excursions or challenging hills for sportier cyclists, everyone will find their place here. The region is excellently signposted and the cycle paths are well developed, ideal for touring bikes. From Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a perfect starting point for cycling tours, you can easily explore the surrounding area and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Especially at the Altmühlsee, a designated bird sanctuary, there are opportunities to observe rare bird species, and leisure opportunities and swimming fun are also not neglected here.

Overall, the Altmühltal is a place where nature and history come together harmoniously and cyclists can immerse themselves in the wonders of the surrounding area. The cycle path promises not only a physical challenge, but also unforgettable impressions, be it while cycling or exploring the diverse landscapes and buildings.
