Cyber attack on Untereisesheim: Administration starts again after a week!
On Monday, October 20, 2025, the municipal administration of Untereisesheim in the Heilbronn district experienced a massive cyber attack that severely affected public life in the region. Within a very short time, a computer system virus had encrypted the contents of the municipal server and paralyzed the administration. The screens remained black and data was blocked. The entire IT infrastructure was affected, except for the telephone system, which fortunately continued to work. The use of pen and paper was required, and employees had to do without digital tools for a week while the administration doors remained closed. These circumstances led to serious restrictions in the performance of public functions. As SWR reports, restoring administrative processes is now considered the highest priority.
The municipality has worked intensively to minimize the impact on citizens and restore IT systems as quickly as possible. The support of the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office and the cybersecurity agency is crucial. A new server system has been installed and the PCs are being gradually rebooted to restart the administration with a working digital system at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Throughout the crisis, the administration was available for urgent concerns by phone or email at info@untereisesheim.de, which made communication easier for citizens.
The background to the attack
The causes of the attack are currently unclear and the investigation is in full swing. The Heilbronn district office has confirmed that the cyber attack on the municipal administration has serious consequences and that full investigation has the highest priority. However, the LKA and the Baden-Württemberg Cyber Agency are currently not providing any detailed information about this. The municipality will coordinate its decision on possible vulnerabilities in the system with the responsible authorities after the ongoing investigation has been completed.
Last week's experiences show how vulnerable our digital infrastructures can be and how important it is to take preventative measures. According to a report by Tagesschau, the shockwave of the attack was great, but the municipality is doing everything it can to get its systems working again as quickly as possible. The citizens of Untereisesheim can now prepare for the administration doors to reopen - this time with a more robust and secure system.
