The strict rules on election posters in Germany state that these are property of the respective parties and that changes or destruction are punishable as property damage. The punishments for this range from fines to prison terms in extreme cases. Parties are entitled to request compensation if posters have to be replaced, according to Tagesschau .

election posters must remain intact during the entire election campaign, and the destruction, for example by tearing or overturning, is not permitted. Even the municipalities have the right to check violations and, if necessary, hang out posters if the parties do not react. This often leads to legal disputes that can go to the administrative courts.

These incidents are part of a broader problem related to the upcoming Bundestag election day on February 23, 2025, since the state and municipal authorities have to pay particular attention to compliance with the election poster regulations.
