The enigmatic water miracle of Constance: a phenomenon of history!

In 1549 there was a remarkable natural phenomenon in the charming city of Constance that still puzzles. On February 23 of this year, documented by the chronicler Christoph Schulthaiß, the water level of Lake Constance suddenly increased by more than half a meter. He was able to observe this impressive spectacle four to five times an hour when the water in the Seerhein, an approximately four-kilometer section, flowed backwards. It took until the afternoon before the spectacle ended again and Schulthaiß described the event as a "miracle". Many fishermen reported on this extraordinary natural spectacle, which has been discussed for centuries. As the [Südkurier] (https://www.suedkurier.de/region/kreis-Konstanz/wasserwunder-von-kunste-kann-bodensee-in-inuten-einen-halben-te-meter-agged-23-06-2548,12407974) reported today the phenomenon of the phenomenon Explain “standing wave”, also called Seiche. This was caused by special wind conditions and the vibrations between Upper and Lower Sea.

Despite these scientific explanations, the phenomenon remains a mystery in many ways. Vor allem die genauen Bedingungen, die zu dem Wasserwunder führten, sind weniger klar. The deflection of the water is measured today with just a few centimeters, and the probability that something like this will happen is extremely low. Professor Frank Peeters from the Limnological Institute of the University of Konstanz examines the phenomenon and encounters different factors such as the amplitude and frequency of the waves that were decisive at the time. The mixture of strong wind and certain water levels led to the extraordinary observations at the time.

the Seerhein in the change of time

The Seerhein itself, which hugs the largest city on Lake Constance, Constance, has gone through many changes over the years. Historical buildings and changes on the bank make it difficult to compare the observations at that time with today's condition. The review of the information from Schulthaiß proves to be complicated because it lacks sufficient data from 1549.

In the meantime, however, Lake Constance is becoming the topic again, since the region is currently fighting with low water. As reports the Tagesschau, the level in Constance is around 2.72 meters and thus just above a historical low. Sand benches are visible in many places, and the smells of Schlick and algae are anything but pleasant. One might think that nature is playing its own pranks with us.

The causes of the low water are diverse. A lack of rain in the past few months and reduced amounts of snow in the Alps have contributed to the current Situation. Even if the level is not considered to be questionable for shipping and the season starts at the weekend, it remains to be seen what challenges will come to us in autumn when the algae die and lack of oxygen in the deeper water areas. A long -term view of an improvement in the water situation requires committed climate protection.
