New night train to Malmö: A dream for travelers from Baden-Württemberg!

Exciting news for travelers who love Scandinavian flair: Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has announced a direct connection between Basel and Sweden. This new EuroNight route takes travelers to Malmö and Copenhagen three times a week, passing through Baden-Württemberg. The timetable has now been published and pre-sales start on Tuesday, November 4th. Anyone who wants to embark on an adventure should not miss the details of this connection.

The connection is offered on the following days: in the northbound direction the train runs on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday; For the return journey south, the train is available on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays. The journey begins in Freiburg (Breisgau) Hbf at 6:24 p.m. and ends in Malmö at 9:35 a.m. after a 14-hour journey. Important to know: Travelers in Baden-Württemberg can only board the train heading north and get off heading south. This offers an interesting opportunity to experience the long route of over 1,400 kilometers from Basel to Malmö and to cross the Öresund Bridge, which is one of the longest bridges in Europe.

Ticket booking and class offerings

From November 4th, tickets can be booked via the SBB Mobile app, the website sbb.ch or directly at the SBB travel centers. Price details are still pending, but you can expect prices that are within the range of existing night train connections from Switzerland. Interestingly, there are three classes to choose from: seated car, couchette car and sleeper car, offering something to suit every travel style.

Despite the high demand for night trains, they are often not economically viable due to their high costs. Therefore, EuroNight needs government support totaling CHF 47 million by 2030. This funding must be approved by Parliament, otherwise the connection could be at risk.

The renaissance of night trains

Why is this all so exciting? Night trains are currently experiencing a real comeback in Europe. With this connection, the Swiss Federal Railways are setting new trends and are also heading towards a trend that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It's not just the comfort that travelers value, but also the secluded, relaxing way of travel that trains offer.

In Germany, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are active in this area and operate popular connections such as from Berlin to Vienna or from Hamburg to Innsbruck. Deutsche Bahn also plans to expand its night connections from 2026, resulting in a growing network of international rail connections.

The new SBB connection to Malmö is not only a great opportunity for travelers, but also part of a larger plan to make overnight passenger transport more attractive. At a time when more and more people are choosing eco-friendly travel options, this could be a significant step in the right direction to promote rail travel across borders.
