Cycling in Abtsgmünd: Citizens demand safe ways and more participation!

On April 10, 2025, a workshop for the development of a new cycling concept took place in Abtsgmünd. Despite extensive advertising, including invitations and local announcements, only ten of the approximately 7,600 inhabitants were present. Jana Mattheis, the head of the community, was disappointed with the small number of participants. During the workshop, the citizens expressed urgent concerns about the safety of cyclists in the region. Many described the current cycle path network as "catastrophic" and criticized that numerous cycle paths are missing or end in dangerous places.

Specific locations were particularly criticized, including the intersection area at the Dettenried industrial area, the main street, Dewanger Straße as well as the intersection on Hohenrainweg and the L1075. The proposals of the participants were complex and ranged from practical to rather utopian ideas, such as a foot and bike brace via the B19 and a ban on truck traffic in Abtsgmünd.

cycling network and safety concerns

Kurt Holz, a committed citizen, welcomed the planned widening of the cycle path along Hohenstadt Straße, which takes place as part of a road renovation. Those present also called for the creation of secure bike paths towards Adelmannsfelden, Essingen, Untergröningen and along the well -known "humpback slope". Another important point that came up during the workshop was the lack of storage facilities for bicycles in Hohenstadt, Abtsgmünd and Untergröningen.

The bicycle traffic concept in Abtsgmünd is intended to complement the existing bicycle traffic network of the Ostalb district. While location and train stations were mainly taken into account when creating the district network, the local concept also aims to include schools, shopping and leisure facilities. The development of the basic data and the definition of relevant goals for cycling began in January, and traffic planner Nico Neumann will not only analyze the local conditions, but also include accident statistics and main traffic routes.

investments in the future

The administration has planned 19,500 euros for the development of the cycling concept, of which you will receive a grant of 7,050 euros from the Stuttgart regional council. The concept is to be presented by the end of 2025. The focus on traffic safety is particularly important because the number of injured cyclists in 2020 increase to 91,281, which means an increase of 4.8 percent compared to the previous year. The citizens in Abtsgmünd are aware of this problem and demand sustainable solutions.

General traffic safety has improved, but not for cycling. This underlines the need to recognize and eliminate the dangers and uncertainty factors. These include, for example, excessive traffic, ruthless drivers and the lack of separate bike paths, which affects the subjective safety of cyclists.

In order to make cycling more secure in Abtsgmünd, the active participation of the citizens is required. Suggestions can also be sent in advance to the head of the head Jana Mattheis in advance. The success of the new bicycle traffic concept depends largely on the identification and correction of the existing problem areas.
