Art and history combined: 500 years of the Peasants' War in Moosheim!
There are exciting cultural events coming up in the Sigmaringen district: For 2025, the theme “Freedom, Equality, Justice. 500 Years of the Peasants’ War” was chosen as the cultural focus. The focus of this complex topic is the question “What remains?”, which emphasizes the relevance of historical events in our current global political reality. This initiative was launched by Cultural forum of the Sigmaringen district was launched and includes around 50 events that address historical achievements and social movements.
A highlight of these activities will be the exhibition of the Bad Saulgauer Kunstverein, which deals with the peasant revolt of 1525. The exhibition is entitled “Art Meets History” and will open on Sunday, June 22nd at 5 p.m. in the listed “Adler” inn in Moosheim. The art association shows works by 25 artists who illuminate the themes of freedom and justice in their work. These are supplemented by images from the Galerie Fähre collection.
A historical atmosphere for art
With its rooms built in 1840, the “Adler” inn offers an ideal historical ambience for this exhibition. Corinna Wagner and Jürgen Schulz-Lorch purchased and renovated the building in 2020. The sculptures are presented in the basement, while a portrait of a wealthy wife and other exhibits from the gallery can be seen on the ground floor. The paintings by the members of the art association address the reverberating consequences of the Peasants' War.
At the vernissage, the “Spielleut” ensemble, which plays historical instruments, will perform pieces from the 16th century. In addition, a culinary selection from the old recipes of the Moosheim bakers ensures the physical well-being of the guests. The supporting program also includes numerous other events, such as a concert evening with the “Petite Reprise” ensemble on July 13th, a song evening with Michael Skuppin and Barny Bitterwolf on July 24th and a lecture by art historian Ingeborg M. Buck on “Art in the 16th Century under the Sign of the Peasants’ War” on July 27th.
Insight into the history of the Peasants' War
The Peasants' War of 1525 was a formative event in German history and is now viewed as an important element in cultural and political education. Events as part of the cultural focus offer the opportunity to reflect on the historical background of the uprisings and their influence on the development of society. This is also supported by exhibitions such as “The Form of Democracy” or “ARTFREIHEIT – My Art. My Theme”, which take place in various cities in the region.
In addition, an upcoming exhibition at the University of Würzburg will address the continuation of the Peasants' War, looking at the developments of art, literature and historical culture in the period from the 16th to the 21st century. This makes it clear that the engagement with history is not just static, but is continually “done”. The University of Würzburg also addresses the social ideologies that have politically exploited the uprising over the centuries.
With all of these projects, the Sigmaringen district shows that dealing with history and exchanging ideas about freedom, justice and equality are still of great importance today. Visit the exhibition and be inspired by the art and history!
