Aalen, Deutschland - Aalen is head! The city's citizens and conservationists have teamed up to protest the planned construction work for a mountain bike dorado at the Ostalb-Skilift. With an impressive collection of signatures of 350 names that were personally collected on the side of the path, they show that nature is important to them. As the Schwäbische Post reported, the initiators are Christa Klink, Herma Geiß and Thomas Thelen, who vehemently campaign against the interventions in the popular local recreation area.

The planned mountain bike routes would not only endanger the idyllic landscape, but also the safety of pedestrians and hikers. Christa Klink, former city councilor, emphasizes that many walkers and tourists are alerted and speak out against the project. "Most people we talked to are against the project," she reports. The trails would cross the paths such as the Haldenweg and the panorama path, which represents potential dangers for pedestrians.

Rainer Hauswurz, board member of the BUND Aalen, describes the project as a “bad nature lover”. The area is overlaid by five protected areas, including water protection areas and biotopes of European importance. "Numerous protected animal and plant species live here," warns Hauswurz and demands a rethink in urban planning.

The initiative "Save the Walk Ways at the Ostalb-Skilift" plans to hand over the collected signatures on November 14th Mayor Bernd Schwarzendorfer. At the same time, an information evening is organized to educate citizens about the risks and the importance of nature. "Planned mountain bike park at the Ostalb-Skilift Aalen-sports tourism on the Eastern Valley or nature maintenance and recreation area for everyone?" is the topic of the event that promises great interest.

The city administration under pressure

The critics accuse the city of Aalen to measure with two levels. A full closure of the Aalbäumle hut was rejected three years ago for nature conservation reasons, while an elaborate mountain bike project is now being planned in a protected area. Klink wonders why the nature conservation concerns no longer apply. "We do not understand the different attitude of the city administration," she explains. "The nature conservation law regulation has not changed now!"

Ob Frederick Brütting tries to smooth the waves. He emphasizes that the MTB project is currently not a priority and that other trails in the area should initially be processed. "The project is not included in the new budget 2025," he explains and refers to the existing trails that have to be secured and signposted. So the city has not yet given a green light for the controversial project.

The citizens of Aalen stand together to raise their voice for the preservation of nature. The discussion about the mountain bike park at the Ostalb ski lift will surely continue for a long time, and the citizens are ready to fight for their beliefs.
