Sick leave in Baden-Württemberg in the first quarter of 2024 continued at a record level
The sick leave of the employees in Baden-Württemberg continued to be high in the first quarter of 2024 with 5.1 percent, according to an analysis of DAK health. This corresponds to an average of 51 on sick leave per day of 1,000. The sick leave remained at a record level compared to the same period last year. Respiratory diseases were again the main cause of work failures.
In the first twelve weeks of 2024, colds caused 130 absenteeism per 100 insured persons, slightly more than in the previous year's quarter with 128 days. Muscle skeleton diseases showed a slight increase of 3.7 percent. Back pain and similar problems led to 72 shortage per 100 insured persons compared to 69 days in the previous year. For mental illnesses, there was an increase of 5.6 percent to 64 absenteeism per 100 insured persons. Overall, more than half of all the absent days (58 percent) accounted for these three disease groups.
Siegfried Eirle, the head of the DAK health in Baden-Württemberg, expresses concern that sick leave stagnates at a high level and is not in sight. Therefore, occupational health management is still an important topic for all employers in the region.
The analysis is based on the data of around 250,000 DAK insured persons in Baden-Württemberg, which were evaluated by the Berlin IGES Institute

While younger employees were often on sick leave, the sick reports in older employees took much longer. On average, it was almost five days for the up to 20 years and around 17 days with the over 60 year olds.
