German industry installs 28,355 new robot - record numbers 2023 in robotics

The publication of the "World Robotics 2024" yearbook shows that the German economy in 2023 has reached a new high with the installation of 28,355 new industrial robots. This corresponds to an increase of 7 % compared to the previous year, which means that Germany is still the largest market for industrial robots in Europe. Particularly noteworthy is the significant increase in the automotive industry, which installed 9,190 robots alone, which corresponds to an increase of 29 %. The automotive industry also contributes to the record of 269,427 operational robots in Germany.

These developments have different effects on the local economy in Stuttgart, which acts as the location of many important automobile manufacturers and suppliers. The Stuttgart automotive industry, among other things, represented by companies such as Daimler and Porsche, benefits to a great extent from the progressive automation, which is supported by the high installation of robots. This could further increase productivity and transform jobs, which also influences the need for skilled workers in the region.

Automation is a central part of the competitiveness of German industry. In the history of the Stuttgart region, the automotive industry has made up a significant part of the economy since the early 20th century. Investments in robots could help to overcome production bottlenecks-as seen during the Covid 19 pandemic due to lack of materials-but also to make it more efficiently.

An important question, however, is how the increased automation will affect employment. While some workplaces may be at risk from robotics, new jobs in robotics technology and maintenance could also be created. Increasing the robot insert not only means more efficient production processes, but also the need for specialized workers who can deal with this technology.

The following table shows the number of installed robots in various industrial branches in Germany in 2023:

Industry installed robot (units) percentage change to the previous year
automotive industry 9.190 +29 %
metal processing industry 4.916 +16 %
chemical and plastic industry 1.832 -12 %
electrical/electronics industry 1.746 +13 %

Despite the positive developments, the industry association VDMA Robotik + Automation predicts an uncertain future. The increasing political and economic uncertainty that has influenced the awarding of order in recent years could face challenges. A selective look at the coming years shows that 2025 could be weaker before the markets recover from 2026.

Stuttgart as a sophisticated location for automotive companies and suppliers faces the task of facing the challenges of automation. In view of the history and market position of the city, it could take a central place on the way to an increasingly automated industrial society.
