Increase in inquiries: Ombudsman for refugees in Baden-Württemberg required

The ombudsman for refugee recording in Baden-Württemberg has released alarming news: In 2023, inquiries rose by over 58 percent compared to the previous year! A total of 141 concerns were processed, which ranged from accommodation issues to medical care concerns and inquiries to family reunification. This dramatic increase is a clear sign of the challenges with which the region is confronted.

"The number of refugees who have been looking for refuge in Baden-Württemberg since 2021 has increased enormously," said Marion Gentges, minister of the judiciary and for migration. It emphasized the importance of a strong ombudsman that offers unbureaucratic support and conveys quick solutions. Klaus Danner, the country's ombud pollution, added that migration remains an ongoing part of our world as long as there is war and crises. The ombudsman gives the protective seekers orientation and takes care of their concerns.

complex challenges and direct help

The ombudsman has found that the inquiries not only become numerous, but also increasingly complex. Over 68 percent of all registered asylum applications in Baden-Württemberg come from Turkey, Syria and Afghanistan. In order to meet these challenges, the ombudsman works closely with the regional council and municipal authorities. By visiting the initial reception facilities, employees receive valuable insights into the individual challenges of the refugees.

The ombudsman will also play a central role in 2024 to respond to the needs of refugees and employees in the initial reception facilities. "Understanding and open dialogue are the key to human and effective migration policy," says Gentges. The ombudsman, which has existed since 2015 and has been permanently established in 2021, is an indispensable contact for everyone who works in the refugee recording.
