Large project in Emden: EWE Plant 320-MW hydrogen system with Drees & Summer for energy transition
In Emden in Lower Saxony, one of the largest hydrogen production plants in Europe is to be created by 2027. Energier supplier EWE has commissioned the Stuttgart consulting company Drees & Sommer SE to project management, approval management and engineering management. The new electrolysis system with a capacity of 320 megawatts will produce up to 26,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, mainly for the steel industry. The water splitting is essentially operated by wind energy and is intended to help avoid network bottlenecks. As part of the European IPCEI program, EWE received a funding of 500 million euros for the project.
The expansion of hydrogen technologies is also important for the Stuttgart region, since such projects are in the context of the energy transition, which regional companies open new business areas and contributes to the creation of jobs. Key industries such as the automotive and steel industry are dependent on sustainable energy supply. The successful implementation of hydrogen projects could strengthen the competitiveness of companies in the region in the long term.
The project in Emden also represents an important step in the development of green hydrogen technologies in Germany. The focus on wind energy as a primary energy source for hydrogen production could further consolidate Germany as a pioneer in the hydrogen economy. In addition, the infrastructure developed by such major projects could also be used for other renewable energy sources.
The strategies for reducing CO2 emissions in industry through the use of green hydrogen are of great interest, especially for industrial centers in the Stuttgart region. The use of hydrogen can not only contribute to the decarbonization of conventional production methods, but also promote new cooperation between companies, strive for innovation and sustainable practices.

Overall, the example of Emden shows how important the transition to a hydrogen economy is for regional development and what great opportunities are associated with it. The project could become a model for other regions that want to take similar paths to achieve their energy goals and strengthen the industrial basis. In Stuttgart, as a center for innovation and technology, this could also inspire the discussion about future mobility solutions and industrial applications.
