Mahl very different: street performance in Magdeburg for Maundy Thursday
On Maundy Thursday (March 28, 2024), Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting by the last sacrament is brought to the streets of Magdeburg's city center as a living monument. The “Mahl very different” project is implemented under the direction of a team from Evangelisch.de. With this project you want to draw attention to the special holiday of Maundy Thursday and the sacrament. The performance takes place in various cities and has already taken place in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Kassel, Hanover and Osnabrück. This year the campaign will be carried out for the first time in an eastern state, namely in Magdeburg.
During the performance, thirteen people in Gänsemarsch go through the streets of the city. A long table is set up and covered in eight different locations. The famous scene of the last sacrament is shown. Jesus announces that one of them will be betrayed. The tension increases until everyone finally leaves the scene except for Jesus and Judas. During the performance, postcards are distributed to the audience with the image of Leonardo and explains what is going on. The campaign takes place in different locations in the city center of Magdeburg.
The first performance location is the crossroads Breiter Weg, Einsteinstrasse at 1 p.m. Afterwards the group moves further through the city and makes stations in places such as the cathedral fountain, the main train station and the old market.
For those who cannot follow the campaign on site, there will be the opportunity to pursue the project live on Facebook and Instagram on the Internet. There are also articles, films and background information on the previous actions on the website www.evangelisch.de/mahlganzanders and www.mahlganzanders.de.
