BAWÜ teachers demand independent school subject computer science from class 5

The Informatistrichtenverband Baden-Württemberg (Illbw) and the Philologists Association of Baden-Württemberg (PHV BW) criticized the planned introduction of the subject "Media Education/Computer Science". According to a press release from the associations, the subject should instead be taught as an independent subject of "computer science" from class 5 to 11. The mixing of the guiding perspective of media education with the subject of computer science is considered problematic. The associations emphasize that computer science is an independent specialist science and should therefore be treated separately. Media education, on the other hand, should be implemented as a cross -sectional task by all subjects.

The informat teachers argue that it is important to teach computer science in class 5 in order to provide computeristic foundations in good time. Girls in particular would benefit from an early start, as interest in computer science often subsides from puberty. The upcoming G9 change is seen as a suitable way to adequately establish the school subject computer science.

The Society for Informatik e.V. (GI) is the largest specialist society for computer science in German -speaking countries and is committed to a common good -oriented digitization. Further information on the GI can be found at www.gi.de.

The following table is compared with the most important demands of the associations:

| Associations of the associations | Notes |
| ———————— | ————- |
| From class 5 to 11, the subject should be explicitly called "Computer Science" | Computer science is an independent specialist science and should be treated separately. |
| Media education should be implemented as a cross -sectional task of all subjects | Mixing computer science and media education is considered problematic. |
| Computer science should start in class 5 | An early start enables the teaching of computeristic foundations and promotes the interest of the students. |
| The G9 change offers a possibility to adequately establish computer science The associations see the G9 change as an opportunity that has been missed in the past. |

The decision of the state government in Baden-Württemberg regarding the introduction of the subject "Media Education/Computer Science" and the criticism of the associations will certainly have an impact on the school landscape on site. In particular, the implementation of the required separation of computer science and media education as well as the possible earlier start of computer science from class 5 may require adjustments in the curriculum and the qualification of teachers.

It is interesting to determine that the informatist teacher associations have long been demanding an independent treatment of computer science as a subject. The discussion about the integration of computer science into school lessons has a long history and has been intensively conducted internationally in recent decades. The development of computer science as a subject in schools has a significant impact on the preparation of the pupils on the requirements of the digital world and can also contribute to promoting MINT subjects.

The exact implementation of the demands of the associations remains to be seen. It remains to be hoped that the decision -makers will carefully examine the concerns and arguments of the associations and make a well -founded decision that meets the requirements of the pupils and society.
