Political Cathon 2024: Develop AI solutions against disinformation in the election campaign

The Baden-Württemberg Foundation has launched an innovative political research, which will take place on December 14th and 15th, 2024 in the State Representation of Baden-Württemberg in Berlin. The aim of the event is to promote the positive possible uses of artificial intelligence (AI) in political communication and at the same time to develop solutions to disinformation and Deepfake. Experts from various departments can register until October 31 to take part in this interdisciplinary exchange. The political chat is designed as a practical laboratory in which theoretical knowledge is to be implemented in concrete applications. For the best ideas, prices of 15,000 euros are awarded in three categories.

The effects of the political research could be of great importance for the political landscape in Baden-Württemberg and beyond. The upcoming elections and the associated challenges by social media and digital disinformation represent a serious problem for political communication. The idea of regarding AI not only as a threat but also as a solution can change the way in which elections will be conducted in the future.

Historically, technologies have always had an impact on political discourse. In recent decades, the means of communication have changed fundamentally - from radio to television to social media. In each of these steps there were discussions about manipulation and the integrity of information. An outstanding example in history is the influence of the elections by television in the 1960s, which changed the public image of candidates forever.

The commitment of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation in this area could also say something about the future role of the state of Baden-Württemberg in the context of digital transformation. Since its foundation in 2000, the foundation has proven to be adaptable and joyful of innovation. With the political chat, another important step is taken to promote the dialogue between citizens: inside and the state and to include civil society in digital developments.
