Telekom welcomes first fiber optic customers on the network of Stadtwerke Weinstadt - chance for gigabit connections
Weinstadt, June 13, 2024-Telekom welcomes the first customer with fiber optic connection in the expansion area in Weinstadt-Strümpfelbach. Telekom does not have its own network in the city to provide its fiber optic offer, but cooperates with the Weinstadt municipal utility company. The cooperation was agreed at the end of 2021 and is now starting to show results.
Steffen Bucher, one of the first customers, uses his fiber optic connection both professionally and privately. He mainly works in the home office and therefore needs a stable and fast internet connection. The fiber optic connection is now well equipped to cover the growing bandwidth requirement of his family.
The expansion of the fiber optic network in Weinstadt is progressing as planned. Mayor Michael Scharmann emphasizes the good cooperation between the Weinstadt municipal utilities and Telekom as helpful for progress. By 2030, a total of 13,000 households in Weinstadt are to be given access to a fiber optic connection.
The special purpose association Broadband expansion has set itself the goal of giving all citizens and companies in the district by 2030 at the latest. By dividing the civil engineering work into several players, they get closer to this goal.
The Stadtwerke Weinstadt is currently continuing the fiber optic expansion in the commercial area along the B29, where around 500 companies have the opportunity to order fiber optic connections to the building. Then the Beutelsbach district is pending.
Hans-Jürgen Bahde, broadband representative of the Stuttgart region and managing director of Gigabit Region Stuttgart GmbH, emphasizes the importance of the municipal utility in the region as an expansion driver. The cooperation contracts with six municipal utilities within the framework of the Stuttgart Gigabit region would show that the framework contract with Telekom forms an excellent basis for a coordinated expansion.
The fiber optic technology is characterized by its robustness to external influences such as magnetic fields, moisture and cold. The data can be transmitted almost to the speed of light. In addition, glass fiber is more environmentally friendly than other transmission media such as copper or coax cable.
The cooperation between Deutsche Telekom and the Gigabit Region Stuttgart aims at the partnership expansion of the ultra -fast fiber optic network. A total of 178 municipalities, including the city of Stuttgart and five neighboring counties, are currently participating in the expansion program.
The Telekom cooperates in addition to the Weinstadt municipal utility company with other municipal utilities in the Stuttgart region, including in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Filderstadt, Ludwigsburg with Asperg, Nürtingen and Sindelfingen.
