Kuwait has started a comprehensive offensive against illegal cryptocurrency mining operations, with around 60 people being examined and further legal steps can be expected in the coming weeks.
This step follows a large security operation To prevent crypto mining, which, according to the authorities, is heavily burdened by the national power grid and endangered the public infrastructure.
The operation was carried out last Friday.
The coordinated action was directed against residential properties that are suspected of being used as illegal crypto mining centers.
According to the Kuwait cabinet, the raids are part of the ongoing national efforts to combat financial crimes, to protect the energy sector against unauthorized consumption and to maintain public security.
civil servants noted that illegal mining installations often consume enormous amounts of electricity, which leads to overload of the power grid, power failures and disorders in living and business areas.
The public prosecutor has ordered the continued detention of several people through the public prosecutor's office for trade matters, including real estate owners who have rented houses for mining operations.
Some suspects were released against a deposit of 500 Kuwaitic Dinar.
The authorities reported the accused report on evidence of large, unexplainable financial deposits-some earned up to 3,000–4,000 dinars from anonyms every day.
Despite the dismissal of the charges, the accused were associated with confiscated crypto mining devices and reports on criminal investigations.
In order to interrupt ongoing illegal mining activities, the Ministry of Electricity has started to switch off the electricity to identified locations.
The restoration of the current is only approved after approval by the Interior Ministry.
