Border controls in Germany: How the right to asylum changes!
The German government has taken a crucial step to combat unauthorized immigration. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) ordered temporary controls at all German land borders. This decision was followed by weeks of debates and discussions about migration and their challenges. Some federal states, such as Baden-Württemberg, have already implemented their own border controls.
While short -term controls aim to reduce the increase in unauthorized entry, the situation at the limits is further difficult by complex legal framework. Jochen Oltmer, an expert in the latest history and migration history at the University of Osnabrück, explains that the rejection of people who exist on the border is associated with a lengthy procedure. He makes it clear that an immediate rejection at the border is not possible and can only be made to the neighboring countries after a complex procedure.
legal challenges
oltmer emphasizes that the legal provisions make the handling of this situation complicated at both European and national level. Simple solutions are not in sight here. "This does not happen immediately on the border. Singing back is usually a process that requires a lot of time and bureaucracy," he says. The current controls therefore restrict the influx, but do not solve the fundamental problems of migration policy.
In the conversation with SWR current presenter Bernhard Seiler, Oltmer emphasizes that border controls, if they are used exclusively as a measure for immigration control, cannot be regarded as a permanent solution. He still sees the need to think about solutions that take into account the structure of migration in Europe. The discussion about the effectiveness and adequacy of such measures will therefore remain lengthy.
