Growing stories: tell the magical candle workshop in Bonlanden!

The Karl Schubert community in Bonlanden is known for the production of high-quality beeswax candles. In the candle workshop, 24 employees are currently working with help who are integrated in the various production steps. Around 3.5 tons of beeswax are processed every year, which mainly comes from the Lüneburg Heath. Production includes approximately 6,000 boxes and 3,000 individually packaged candles per year.

The variety of the candles manufactured is impressive: they are produced in different forms such as conical, cylindrical, large, small, thick and dainty. The manufacturing process begins with the clinging of the wick, followed by immersing immersion in liquid beeswax. Two dipping tables are used for this process, with the wick made of cotton and colored with red wax. To ensure efficient immersion of the candles, a carousel system is used.

After the diving process, the candles are shortened and packed. The finished products are sold in schools, kindergartens and organic shops or are offered directly in the workshop. Matthias Adam, who has been working in the workshop for 27 years, emphasizes that he is great fun.

The candles are made from pure beeswax, whereby the striking fragrance of the wax offers a special experience for many visitors to the workshop. The manufacturing process includes numerous steps, starting when the wick is out and even the final packaging. While many steps are handcrafted, a special candle cutting machine is used to separate the candle lengths, which cuts more than 100,000 thinner candles a year. Finish candles, on the other hand, require manual processing that requires careful tact.

In the workshop, people with disabilities work according to their individual skills, Motivation and development opportunities. The production goals are based on the numbers of the previous year and the candles are made in a total of 30 different sizes. The packaging work includes folding and gluing several thousand boxes, whereby the working atmosphere is often compared to that of a beehive.
