Storm in Rastatt: Fire brigade fights against chaos and destruction!

A serious storm affected Rastatt in mid -July. With a hurricane gust that lasted about 15 minutes, around 130 missions of the volunteer fire brigade were necessary. The fire brigade, technical relief organization, red cross and the police were in constant use to eliminate fallen trees, full basement and broken roof tiles.

The city commander Thomas Reiff, who has been in office since June, was in action during the storm after the gas smell was reported in a basement. The extreme weather conditions significantly make access to the place of use significantly. However, the smell of gas turned out to be a false alarm because rainwater was running into the basement. In order to better prioritize the missions at future storms, two to three explorers should be in use.

missions and effects

The storm front not only hit the core city, but also the industrial area, Dörfel and various districts in the Ried. According to reports, the Rastatt fire brigade mastered around 120 storm -related missions at night, supported by the technical relief organization. Technical companies were busy with pumping plants until late at night to transport wastewater to sewage treatment plants.

The precipitation led to falling leaves and branches clogging the street inlets and gullies, which led to floods in some streets. On Thursday morning, urban employees and fire brigade were again deployed to view damage and remove fallen trees. The Murgdamm between the Franzbrücke and the Badener Bridge was closed due to broken branches.

The volunteer fire brigade reported a first balance that documented considerable building damage due to fallen trees and parts of the building as well as an injured person. Numerous damage to trees was found, especially in the inner city area, while in the city forest there were occasional uprooted trees and many broken branches. Fortunately, the urban cemeteries were spared from falling trees.

To prepare for future extreme weather events, the city of Rastatt has developed a heavy rain concept together with the district. The aim of showing the citizens of potential flood risks. In addition, city drainage offers free consultation appointments for owners to discuss protective measures against heavy rain.

Mayor Müller and Mayor Knoth thank the emergency services for their work and plan additional consultation hours of the heavy rain officers in particularly affected Rieddörfers. In addition, local inspections are planned to check quickly implementable countermeasures in heavily affected areas.
