Friedrichshafen: Autonomous buses continue - tested until 2025!

Friedrichshafen, Deutschland - Baden-Württemberg Friedrichshafen remains in driving fun: Test autonomous buses!

The future of local public transport picks up speed! In Friedrichshafen, passengers can continue to join the self -driving minibuses, while the company in Mannheim ends abruptly. The innovative "Rabus" project has proven to be a success and will be extended by the end of June 2025, as the Ministry of Transport proudly announces. The positive results of the first test phase inspired the decision, and the city on Lake Constance remains a hotspot for autonomous driving.

A look at the numbers

Since October, two autonomous minibuses have been traveling in Mannheim and Friedrichshafen, which offer space for up to ten passengers. These vehicles, who have a security driver on board, drive independently and have already attracted 1,450 enthusiastic test drivers. The trips are free of charge for the passengers, and the country has funded the project with almost 14 million euros. There is an additional 1.8 million euros for the extension to further test the technology and test acceptance among the population.

While Mannheim is out of the race from March 2025 from March 2025, the autonomous shuttles in Friedrichshafen can drive both in the city and in the surrounding area - at speeds of at least 60 km/h. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) sees these shuttles a chance to better connect rural regions to public transport. The future of travel could not be more autonomous and convenient!
