Friedrichshafen: Autonomous shuttle buses in test operation by 2025!

In Friedrichshafen, the exciting adventure of autonomous buses goes into the next round! The self-driving electric shuttle that have been sweating through the city for a month can look forward to an extension of their pilot project. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) announced that the "Rabus" project will continue until mid -2025. The state government will increase financial support by a whopping 1.8 million euros to a total of around 16 million euros. A real coup for the future of local public transport!

faster and safer on the go

The two e-buses, which have been coaching passengers through the city center since the end of October, are now also used on country roads between the city center and the Schnetzenhausen district. There the shuttle can reach up to 60 km/h - a real speed frenzy compared to the 40 km/h in the city! With space for up to ten passengers, the buses are well equipped for the test drives. The technology is impressive: cameras, radar and laser monitor the traffic situation while a driver sits at the wheel for safety to intervene in an emergency.

The interest in this innovative project is huge! Over 1,450 citizens have registered as test passengers to try out the new shuttle buses. The project, a joint initiative of ZF Friedrichshafen and Stadtverkehr Friedrichshafen GmbH, could not only revolutionize the connection of rural regions to local public transport, but also offer an answer to the acute lack of driver in the industry. The future of traffic in Germany could be more autonomous than many think!
