Philippsburg starts the future: New converter brings wind power!
An important step in the energy transition: On Friday, the new converter will be officially put into operation on the site of the former nuclear power plant in Philippsburg! After more than four years of hard work, this converter is ready to bring electricity from the North Sea wind farms to the south of Germany. A real progress for sustainable energy supply!
electricity from the North Sea for the south
The converter is a central element of the ambitious energy transition project Ultranet. Here the electricity is transported to Philippsburg over an impressive route of 340 kilometers from Meerbusch in North Rhine-Westphalia. There the direct current is converted into alternating current and fed into the network. This technology enables the clean energy from the wind farms, among other things to make ENBW, also usable in southern Germany.
But the anticipation of green electricity still has to be steamed. The planned power line from Osterath to Philippsburg is expected to go into operation until the end of 2026. A spokesman for TransnetBW said that a “electricity mix” will arrive in Philippsburg until then. The costs for the entire converter project amount to around 700 million euros. Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) is also expected to solemnly commissioning, which underlines the importance of this event.
Philippsburg therefore symbolically stands for change in energy supply. The blasting of the cooling towers of the former nuclear power plant in May 2020 already marked the end of an era. With the new converter, the Region is now becoming an important hub for renewable energies and shows how the conversion of the energy infrastructure is progressing.
