Mannheim takes measures: E-scooter rental from 2025 heavily limited!

In Mannheim, a comprehensive reform for the use of e-scooters will come into force in the city. From January 1, 2025, the number of approved e-treads will be reduced by one third to a total of 2,000 vehicles. This applies in particular to three selected providers: Dott, Voi and Bolt. This initiative, which was decided by the local council in May 2024, aims to make mobility more efficient in the city and to free the streets of wildly parked scooters, which has been a major problem for a long time. As mrn News is also introduced, in which fixed places are made in strongly frequented places be defined. This is intended to control the chaos when parking the scooters.

A central element of the new system is the obligation to document the properly parking using a photo evidence. In the future, it will only be possible for providers to provide their services if this regulation is observed. In addition, parking zones are set up, for example in the pedestrian zone and on the banks of the Neckar, which increases the accessibility of the paths and the flow of pedestrian traffic is improved. Free parking outside the specified areas remains, but under strict requirements. These provisions are intended to facilitate the use of e-scooters in suburbs, where public transport is less dense to optimize the so-called "last mile", according to the city administration. This goes hand in hand with the aim of improving traffic and increasing mobility, as well as Mannheimer Morgen reported.

The permits for the new regulations are limited by the end of 2026 and the concept should be evaluated within this period. With these measures, Mannheim sets a clear sign of the future of urban mobility and against the impetuous parking of e-scooters in the city.
