Riedbahn open again! Trains between Frankfurt and Mannheim roles from Sunday

Mannheim, Deutschland - The Riedbahn route between Frankfurt and Mannheim, one of the most used train connections in Germany, finally opens its tracks again after five months. Deutsche Bahn announced on Monday that the comprehensive renovation work has been completed. From Sunday, December 15th, trains of the long-distance, regional and freight transport can use this route again, but initially with restrictions, such as hessenschau.de reported.

Total tracks, soft, signals, soundproofing walls and overhead lines were renewed. There will therefore be some adjustments, especially in long -distance transport, since trains have to drive slower due to the lack of digital control systems. The travel time for the 70 kilometers from Mannheim to Frankfurt can extend by several minutes. In addition, there will still be restrictions on freight transport by December 23, while some regional railway lines will only be put into operation from December 24th, such as Tagesschau.de

The last steps for reopening

The first plagues, including a freight train, will take the Riedbahn on Sunday night. A total of around 95 percent of the planned remote and regional connections should be available again from December 15, but S-Bahn traffic in the southern section will continue to be supported by replacement buses by mid-January. The cost of the renovation amounts to an estimated 1.3 billion euros and should significantly relieve the route from disorders, which should improve travel times for thousands of commuters.

The Riedbahn is considered a model project for the DB, which plans to have a total of 41 highly loaded routes renovated by 2031 in order to improve the reliability of the network. The necessary measures were overdue because the old infrastructure had led to numerous delays and failures in the past.
