Large battery memory in Weighheim: Ecological departure for the region!
In Villingen-Schwenningen, there is an important project that could drive the energy transition in the region. The Eco Stor company from Kirchheim near Munich plans to build a gigantic battery memory on an area of 3.5 hectares in Weighheim. This initiative could not only mean an economic but also an ecological thrust for the region, since it enables the storage of excess electricity and thus optimizes the use of renewable energies. According to a report by Südkurier this project could make the public power supply more climate -friendly and cheaper.
The planned battery storage plant will offer an impressive performance of 300 megawatts and a storage capacity of 716 megawatt hours. Eco Stor plans to start construction work by mid -2027. This system will be able to save electricity surpluses that arise from wind or solar energy, for example, and to feed them into the power grid if necessary. In theory, this could supply around one and a half million households for two hours in the morning and evening with renewable electricity.

On the site, three memory blocks are to be created, each with an output of 100 megawatts and a storage capacity of 238 megawatt hours. These blocks are equipped with the latest lithium-ion batteries that enable efficient storage and use of electricity. Eco Stor sees itself as a pioneer in the "memory turn" and plans to implement similar projects in addition to Weighheim as well as at other locations in Germany.
The city administration of Villingen-Schwenningen has so far only received an ECO STOR building preliminary request, but this is incomplete. Press spokeswoman Madlen Falke explained that the planning law issues must first be clarified before the project can be pursued. This could prove to be decisive for the progress of the project.
A look into the future of energy supply
The project in Weigheim is part of a greater movement in Germany that aims to optimize the use of renewable energies and to make the energy supply safer, cleaner and cheaper. Eco Stor plans to put the first of her facilities in Bollingstedt into operation by May 2025, and follows a strategy based on private investments, without government funding, such as Südkurier reported.
