Baden-Württemberg promotes projects for researching replacement methods for animal experiments

The state of Baden-Württemberg continues to work consistently for animal welfare and promotes two projects for researching replacement and supplementary methods for animal experiments. This decision was made by a evaluation commission that included representatives from the areas of animal welfare and science.

The Minister of Nutrition, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection, Peter Hauk, emphasized that it was the state's declared goal of further reducing the number and burden on test animals. By promoting suitable projects for the development of replacement and supplementary methods, one would like to advance this path.

Baden-Württemberg is considered an important location for biomedical research, which also means that animal experiments are carried out in many facilities. Each application for animal experiments is strictly examined by the responsible authorities and only approved with the strict compliance with the legal requirements.

This year two projects were selected that receive funding. Minister Hauk thanked all scientists who have applied, as well as the evaluation commission for their excellent work.

The promotion of replacement and supplementary methods for animal experiments is not only an important step in animal welfare, but can also have long-term effects on the research landscape. The development of alternative methods can reduce animal experiments and ultimately even be replaced entirely. This would not only reduce the suffering of animals, but also stimulate ethical questions and discussions in research.
