Large differences in performance at learning status 5 in Baden-Württemberg 2023
The results of the state-owned learning status "Learning level 5" for 2023 show large differences in performance between the school types and within the school types in Baden-Württemberg. At the beginning of the school year 2023/24, almost 89,000 pupils took part in the learning status diagnosis that offers tests in the subjects of mathematics and German. The teachers derive funding opportunities from the results in order to support the students according to their level of competence.
The results that have now been published as a monitoring report show that there are big differences in the performance level of the students at the beginning of the fifth grade. Especially in reading understanding, there are clear differences between the types of school. While over half of the pupils at the high school have a strong reading understanding, it is only two percent at Werkreal/secondary schools. In all types of school, however, a large part of the student body is at the middle learning level, which underlines the need for targeted support. There is also a heterogeneous distribution of competencies in mathematics.
The learning status "Learning level 5" is developed by the Institute for Education Analysis Baden-Württemberg and is mandatory for all secondary public schools in the country. The results serve the teachers to derive individual support needs. Extensive materials are available for this, which are tailored to the different performance levels of the students.
The current results of the learning status show that targeted support measures are of great importance in order to reduce the differences in performance between the students. It is important that the schools recognize the individual needs of their student body and provide appropriate support measures in order to enable all students fairly educational opportunities.
