Program for the climate -neutral expansion of the living space for students

on the initiative of Baden-Württemberg, the Federal Council called for the expansion and climate protection-oriented renovation of student dormitories. The expansion of the offer and the demand for climate neutrality must go hand in hand. New living space has to be created and existing buildings are renovated.

At the request of Baden-Württemberg, the Federal Council asked the Federal Government to set up a program for climate-neutral, ambitious and fast expansion of the living space for students. In addition, the Federal Government is asked to take suitable measures to improve the energy efficiency of the housing stock - with the aim of a climate -neutral building stock.

"There is not only a significant need for suitable living space for students," said the Baden-Württemberg Minister of Science Teresa Bauer "With a view to climate protection, there are also many student residues. The problem is becoming increasingly pressing, today's Federal Council decision is an important sign of the federal government. ”

Due to the steadily increasing number of students and the total living environment characterized by influx and growth, especially in the university cities, the demand for affordable student living space in Baden-Württemberg increases-but also throughout Germany. The persistently high demand for student living space for affordable rents will therefore not be deceptive in the future.

student living must meet the requirements of climate protection

Theresia Bauer: "The further expansion and maintenance of an attractive range of student living are necessary. However, this must be justice for climate protection." The construction of climate -neutral student apartments and the climate -oriented modernization of student apartments can contribute to reducing carbon dioxide and thus to achieve the goal of a climate -neutral building stock.

Baden-Württemberg has set itself the goal of reaching the climate neutrality of public institutions by 2030 and the country by 2040

incentives for private providers of student living

Still just under ten percent of students in Germany are housed in student residential complexes. "In order to achieve the goal of a nationwide and climate protection -oriented housing offer, a funding program tailored not only are required to the students, but also private providers of student living is required, i.e. to provide affordable living space as possible," explains Theresia Bauer. Accordingly, the initiative of the State of Baden-Württemberg, which was decided in the Federal Council, turns to both groups.
