Pleasing trend: More and more young people are volunteering at the fire brigade in Baden-Württemberg
More and more people are volunteering with the fire brigade in Baden-Württemberg, in particular young people are increasingly participating in the work of the fire departments. This is shown by the fire brigade statistics 2023, which was recently published. According to the statistics, the number of members in the youth fire brigades increased by around nine percent compared to the previous year. It is particularly gratifying that the proportion of girls in the youth groups has increased by around 18 percent.
Overall, the fire brigades in Baden-Württemberg were strongly demanded in 2023 due to the warmest year since the start of the records. The number of fire operations increased by 1.5 percent compared to the previous year, and technical assistance also increased significantly.
In the total of 133,994 missions in 2023, 46 percent of technical assistance, 21 percent of false alarms, 16 percent on fire operations, seven percent on emergency service emergencies and ten percent of other missions. There was a significant increase in particular with technical assistance, especially due to severe weather events.
Despite the increased number of operations, a total of 15,998 people were saved by the fire brigades for fire operations and technical assistance. The number of injured firefighters has also risen, but there were no fatal injuries during the missions.
The number of fire brigade members rose on a record high of 115,440 people, including 112,751 volunteer firefighters. The increase in firefighters by around six percent is particularly gratifying. There are also increasing number of members in the youth fire brigades and age departments.
Overall, the fire brigade in Baden-Württemberg is well positioned and the increasing numbers among the fire brigade members and the youngsters look optimistically into the future. The deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Thomas Strobl praises the voluntary commitment and emphasizes the important role of fire brigades when securing the high level of security in the country.
