New construction of the Rottweil correctional facility: Modernization of the prison system in Baden-Württemberg
The new building of the correctional facility in Rottweil is expected to be put into operation in 2027. This new building is part of a comprehensive detention development program of the state of Baden-Württemberg in order to improve the structure and performance of the prison. With the completion of the new building, older and smaller correctional facilities and branch offices in Rottweil, Hechingen, Villingen-Schwenningen and Waldshut-Tiengen are replaced.
The Minister of Justice and for Migration, Marion Gentges, emphasized the need to expand the detention capacity and create efficient structures in prisons. The new correctional facility in Rottweil will be responsible for male adults with around 500 detention places and significantly strengthen performance in all areas. Further employment options for the previous staff are planned.
The state of Baden-Württemberg is investing around 280 million euros in the new building, which will include 18 areas of use with 502 detention places and barrier-free detention rooms. The construction work started in June 2023 and should be completed by 2027. The older correctional facilities and branch offices in Rottweil, Hechingen, Villingen-Schwenningen and Waldshut-Tiengen mostly come from the 19th century and require high renovation costs that are not in relation to the existing detention.
The closure and replacement of these older facilities by the new building in Rottweil will improve the efficiency and modernity of the prison in Baden-Württemberg. The new correctional facility will not only offer more prisoner places, but also enable better conditions for the employees and treatment and care offers for the detainees.
