All regional trains in Baden-Württemberg will run with 100% green electricity from 2024

Title: All regional trains in Baden-Württemberg will run with green electricity from 2024

Good news for climate protection in Baden-Württemberg: Since the beginning of 2024, all regional trains of the country have been on the electrified routes with green electricity. This measure is intended to help reduce the ecological footprint of public transport and to minimize the emissions of climate -damaging carbon dioxide.

Transport Minister Winfried Hermann emphasized that train travels in Baden-Württemberg have become even more environmentally friendly this year. The electrical trains are now 100 percent driven with green electricity, which comes exclusively from renewable energy sources such as wind, sun or water. This avoids many tons of climate -damaging carbon dioxide.

The investment in green electricity amounts to around 4.5 million euros for 2024. Trains of the Rhein-Neckar S-Bahn, the Südwest Express ("Süwex") and the Main-Neckar-Bahn have also been running on the Baden-Württemberg part with green electricity since the beginning of the year. This step helps to reduce CO2 emissions in the traffic sector.

also on diesel routes, Baden-Württemberg relies on alternative fuels. Since summer 2022, diesel trains have been refueled with BIOSPRIT, which is made from biological residual and waste materials and is free of palm oil. This measure aims to reduce the ecological footprint of rail traffic and reduce CO2 emissions by 90 percent.

Transport Minister Hermann emphasized the importance of electrification of the railway lines in order to consistently drive with green electricity and thus climate -neutral. The proportion of electrified railway lines in the country is well above the national average at 71 percent. Baden-Württemberg is as active in terms of electrification as no other state.

The use of green electricity and the switch to alternative fuels in rail traffic have positive effects on climate protection in Baden-Württemberg. By reducing climate -damaging emissions, the country makes an important contribution to achieving the climate protection goals. In addition, Baden-Württemberg sets an example of other regions and contributes to making public transport more environmentally friendly.
